Do-It-Yourself Naming
Ceremonies
A naming ceremony
is a very personal event to celebrate your child and
his/her place in the family and community of friends.
From time immemorial the
ceremonial naming of children has been carried out by
the child’s family. While most families today
choose to have an officiated naming ceremony
developed, created and performed by a wise and
creative celebrant who will engender a sense of
occasion. However, this is not always possible due to
distance, financial considerations or a wish for
privacy or just because the parents want to go back to
this earlier tradition and perform their child’s
naming ceremony themselves.
If this is your
wish, or where remote location makes it difficult to
engage the services of a professional celebrant, or
where you just want to have a professionally created
ceremony without the big-ticket cost of a professional
celebrant to perform it, the script-only DIY Naming
Ceremonies service will enable you to have a beautiful
and expertly created naming ceremony where you choose
to conduct the ceremony yourselves or have a close
family member or friend lead you through the ceremony.
All types of
families can be accommodated. Regardless of whether
you are a married couple, a de facto couple, no longer
together, a same-sex couple or a single parent, the
ceremony will be tailored to your circumstances
As one of South East
Queensland's most experienced naming celebrants I am
an expert at writing very personal naming ceremonies
celebrating your child's unique heritage and
expressing your commitment to your child in warm and
loving words, and I take as much trouble with
do-it-yourself script-only ceremonies as I do with
those at which I officiate.
Each ceremony is
purpose written and is very personal. It will also
reflect the type of ceremony you have chosen
- Baby Naming
- 1st Birthday Naming
- Naming of an older child, or
- Adult Naming/Re-Naming
As it has no legal
status a naming ceremony you are not obligated to
incorporate anything in particular in the
ceremony. While naming ceremonies are usually
secular you may request the inclusion of religous
references.
Generally speaking, however, the ceremony includes
- A welcome
- Promises by the parents
- Appointment of sponsors (godparents, mentors,
etc)
- Sponsor promises
- Formal naming
- Reason for the choice of names
The ceremony may
also include a reading and/or a simple ritual, such a
lighting a candle, planting a tree, a blossom
blessing, or wishing stones.
The ceremony will be
purpose-written for you and based on information you
provide through completing a Ceremony Workbook.
You will be provided
with a beautifully presented keepsake copy of the
ceremony suitable for reading from on the day. A
commemorative certificate is also a nice touch. A PDF
file for a print-it-yourself certificate is included
in the ceremony fee. Alternatively, for a modest
additional charge you can order beautifully printed
certificates provided in a certificate holder instead
of the printable PDF files.
The whole experience was
easy thanks to you.
We had the family in tears, they were all very moved
by the ceremony.
Very
satisfied and thankful for your time and help. The
certificates are beautiful. 11/10
The experience allowed
us to help create the service, It made it extremely
personal. Jenny was thorough, caring, and detailed in
bringing the script/service to life. She met our time
frames, given the limited notice, which was terrific.
She captured everything we wanted in the day and found
special ways to include those important to us.
